Methanol on Enceladus

چکیده
[1] Near infrared spectra of the surface of Enceladus returned by Cassini show the presence of an absorption feature at 3.53 mm, ascribed by Brown et al. (2006) to ‘‘short chain organics,’’ and by Newman et al. (2007) to hydrogen peroxide. We assign this feature tentatively to methanol. Variations in the peak position of the feature suggest that methanol in the ‘‘tiger stripes’’ region may be segregated from the water ice, and not homogeneously distributed in the ice matrix. The photolytic destruction of methanol implies that methane or methanol itself must be continually deposited on the surface. On Enceladus, methanol may be generated photochemically from a mixed methane/water ice, or deposited from the plume itself. The variation in the concentration of methanol over the surface could be used to distinguish between these two processes. Citation: Hodyss, R., C. D. Parkinson, P. V. Johnson, J. V. Stern, J. D. Tidal evolution of Mimas, Enceladus, and Dione
The tidal evolution through several resonances involving Mimas, Enceladus, and/or Dione is studied numerically with an averaged resonance model. We find that, in the Enceladus–Dione 2:1 e-Enceladus type resonance, Enceladus evolves chaotically in the future for some values of k2/Q. Past evolution of the system is marked by temporary capture into the Enceladus–Dione 4:2 ee ′-mixed resonance. We ...
متن کاملThe Case for Enceladus Science
Enceladus is the only unambiguous example of a cryovolcanically active icy satellite identified in the outer solar system and can be used to study active processes that are thought to have once played a role in shaping the surfaces of other icy satellites. These processes include tidal heating, cryovolcanism, and ice tectonism, which all can be studied as they currently happen on Enceladus. Mor...
متن کاملCan Life Begin on Enceladus? A Perspective from Hydrothermal Chemistry
Enceladus is a target of future missions designed to search for existing life or its precursors. Recent flybys of Enceladus by the Cassini probe have confirmed the existence of a long-lived global ocean laced with organic compounds and biologically available nitrogen. This immediately suggests the possibility that life could have begun and may still exist on Enceladus. Here we will compare the ...
متن کاملInternal Structure of Enceladus and Dione from Orbital Constraints
Introduction Enceladus is emitting measurable heat (37 GW) from a region centered on its South Pole [1]. Radioactive and accretional heating are expected to be minimal for such a small, low-density body, implying that the observed heat flow is due to past or present tidal dissipation [2]. The tidal heat production for which Enceladus’ eccentricity is in steady state, however, cannot exceed 1.1 ...
متن کاملFeasibility of Detecting Bioorganic Compounds in Enceladus Plumes with the Enceladus Organic Analyzer
Enceladus presents an excellent opportunity to detect organic molecules that are relevant for habitability as well as bioorganic molecules that provide evidence for extraterrestrial life because Enceladus' plume is composed of material from the subsurface ocean that has a high habitability potential and significant organic content. A primary challenge is to send instruments to Enceladus that ca...
